Oodles Of Olive Oyl

Olive Oyl, as portrayed in the Paramount/Famous Studios' cartoons was the object of the first "schoolboy crush" that many of us baby boomers had.  In fact, even into our teen and early adult years, we would find excuses to watch a few Popeye cartoons now and then.  This page is dedicated to Ms. Oyl and to what her exploits (and her creators) taught us about life and love.

LIES PARAMOUNT
TOLD ME

I've been dealing with the lessons the old Paramount/Famous Studios' Popeye cartoons can teach us about life and love.  However, looking at the films another way, I can easily see how repeatedly watching exaggerated characters in stereotypical romantic plots and situations could lead one to start to believe the following lies:

Lie #1: There is such a thing as true love at first sight.

Lie #2: Attraction, lust, sex, and love are all the same thing.

Lie #3: Unless you are pretty or handsome, you can forget about ever finding love, and unless members of the opposite sex make fire alarms go off in your head and cause your tongue to hang out, they aren't worth spending time with.

Lie #4: When a member of the opposite sex says, "I love you," don't trust him or her because he or she will dump you if times get rough or if "something better" comes along.

Lie #5: You need to impress a would-be lover with your looks, charm, money, status, or skills.  The whole point of a date is to convince the other how great you are.  Nobody will ever like you just for being yourself.

Lie #6: You simply MUST flirt or make out/have a fling with anyone and everyone who attracts you or you'll go crazy with frustration and won't be a "real man" or "real woman."

Lie #7: The normal way to win someone's heart is by putting down, beating up, or tricking your rivals.  Competition is always part of the process of wooing.  And all's fair in love and war.

See, the bottom line is, enjoy your Popeye cartoons, but remember, Kiddies,
THEY ARE MAKE BELIEVE!!!!!
Don't try this at home!!!
