Deborah Bierly

I learned to play the guitar in 7th grade and began writing my own songs to praise and worship God during my college years.  I have written several hundred songs since then.

I collect songs together into programs based on themes such as faith, heaven, love and marriage, prayer, etc.

New in Fall 2008:

The Lord’s Prayer

I talk about the themes in The Lord’s Prayer and sing original songs that relate to those themes.

New in Summer 2008:

 Learning To Trust Again

The Book Of Ruth tells the stories of Naomi and Ruth, widows in the land of Moab, their return to Israel, and the eventual marriage of Ruth.

The songs in this program remind us all that God is able to provide in any circumstance.

ON THE ROAD TO JERUSALEM

As Jesus traveled to Jerusalem for his last Passover feast, he met many people on the way.  Some he healed.  Some he taught.  Some he touched.  This program tells their stories.  Some songs from They Met Jesus are included.

Album #1 (Cassette Tape):

DIAMONDS IN HER EYES

debpic6

Songlist:

Diamonds In Her Eyes- A story of a truly beautiful woman.

O Little Lamb - Written from a shepherd’s perspective.

Will You Sit Beside Me? - Written from the viewpoint of a terminally ill person.

If I Saw You As A Carpenter - How I see Jesus - as a carpenter, a teacher, a friend - affects how I treat him and respond to him.

There'll Be No Crying There - One of my favorite passages in the Bible is near the end, where the golden streets and the light of the Lamb are described.  In difficult times, we remind each other that there are better times to come when there will be no crying or pain or sickness any more, for the old things will have passed away and all things will become new.

Empty Eyes - Written from the viewpoint of the spouse of an Alheizmers patient.

The Glory Of The Lord - Paul, in Romans, reminds us that no one is without witness to God.  All they have to do is look at the heavens and the earth to see the glory of the Lord.

We Follow The Shepherd - Tough times can be very difficult.  The road is long and sometimes scary.  However, we follow the shepherd and trust him to lead us safely home.

GETTING TO KNOW ME

I have been writing poems since childhood.   I also enjoy writing essays on various subjects.   I often find inspiration from daily life, sermons, the Scriptures, or current events.

My dad taught me the rudiments of guitar playing in Junior High.  I continued to teach myself as I played choruses and folk tunes for High School and college youth groups along with many other aspiring musicians.

I have always loved the old hymns.  My maternal grandmother used to conduct mini sing-a-longs while driving us in the car.  As well as learning some fun songs like "Mares Eat Oats" and "Bicycle Built For Two," she sang many lively hymns such as "Count Your Blessings,  “Bringing In The Sheaves,  “The Little Brown Church In The Vale,” and "I Love To Tell The Story."   Years later, I learned the hymns of Fanny Crosby which quickly became some of my favorites.

Combined, these influences form the
basis of my singing style.

In college, I began to write my own songs, praising God or pouring out my heart to him, depending on the circumstances.  I found that I communicated well with him through reflection and song.  Through the years, I often write on themes I am wrestling with God about, or things I have heard.  Some thoughts remain in my notebooks.  Some become songs.

Because my early work was an extension of my prayer life, I did not think to share my songs with others.  However, God provided me with a roommate in the early 1980s who insisted I keep the door of my room open when I sang.  Later, she persistently invited me out to the living room, first with my back to her and then facing her.  Soon after, she pressed me into service at a ladies Bible study and then in front of the whole congregation.   As people responded to the songs, I began to realize that God had given me a gift to share, not to hide.   And so I continued to work at sharing my songs.

As the years went on, love and marriage and kids joined in and our path took some unexpected turns, but the Lord kept me close and continued to help me write when time and health allowed.

We moved to Iowa in 1998 and the children began attending school full time.  I sang in our church occasionally, but then was asked to present a program at a gathering for another church.   After that first program, I began writing more and eventually produced "On The Road To Jerusalem," as a solo program and later as a church-wide cantata involving many costumed participants.

I began recording in 2001 with “Diamonds In Her Eyes.”

This was followed by “Come All” and “What Shall We Do?”

At the same time, I continued to develop and present programs and concerts.

During the summer of 2008, I was joined by my daughter, Abigail, to present “Learning to Trust Again, The Story of Ruth” in a number of area churches.  This is a dramatic presentation, in costume, and includes speaking parts as well as songs.  It has been very well-received by congregations.
