Help Popeye!!!

No, I didn't say, "Help, Popeye!"

December 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2004, Boomerang will run 24 hour Popeye Marathons, beginning at 8 am each Friday morning.  More than 200 of the Fleischer and Famous Studios cartoons will be shown.  Well, blow me down!  What a chance for Popeye fans with satellite TV to watch the classics!

Email The BBC Please!!!

This email was received from Britain
on November 9 2004:

Hi there!

Just a note to say I came across your site a few weeks ago, and I really enjoy it.  I am a 21 year old British fan of Popeye (since I was about 5).  Your help would be most appreciated.

About 10 years ago, the BBC TV channel over here showed almost every single Famous Studios and Fleischer cartoon over a few weeks, including the really violent and so-called "politically incorrect" ones, such as "How Green Is My Spinach?," "Quick On The Vigor," "Royal Four-Flusher," and many more.  Now you'd be luck if you saw a Hanna-Barbera Popeye cartoon.  I am trying to get the BBC to show those cartoons again, and if I give you their email link, could you post it on your site, so you and other Popeye fans can write or email them?  The link is:

Your help in getting these brilliant cartoons back on British TV would be most appreciated.

FAN ALERT - July 7, 2002
Cartoon Network has started showing 13 new episodes of the program described below at 1 AM (EST) on Sunday night/Monday mornings following The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show.

Here's the Cartoon Network Press release(courtesy of Steve Rice):

"I'm Popeye" debuts on Cartoon Network
on October 28, 2002

Salty Swabbie Restored to His Full Glory for New Series  Devoted to Classic Animation

Starting Monday, October 28,2002, Cartoon Network will give one of animation's classic characters a new weekly series with the debut of "I'm Popeye."  Each half-hour episode, airing Mondays at 1 a.m. (ET, PT) will include three Popeye cartoons that have been restored to their original theatrical state.  Many of these cartoons have never been shown on television in their original form.

The cartoons presented as part of "I'm Popeye" will be culled from hundreds of color and black and white theatrical shorts from Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios, ranging from 1933's first Popeye cartoon "Popeye the Sailor" through 1957's "Spooky Swabs."  In addition, the show will also present facts and trivia about the spinach-eating sailor and his supporting cast, including Olive Oyl, Bluto and Wimpy.  "I'm Popeye" will navigate Popeye's rich history, including his origins in E.C. Segar's Thimble Theatre comic strip, and examine the personalities behind the scenes, such as Jack Mercer (the voice of Popeye) and Max and Dave Fleischer, who made the mumbling mariner a star.

"I'm Popeye" is the latest Cartoon Network series that takes an in-depth look at classic animation.  Series such as The Tex Avery Show, The Bob Clampett Show and The Chuck Jones Show offer retrospectives on the works of animation's masters. Cartoon Network's ToonHeads, which tackles subjects like the evolution of Elmer Fudd and wartime cartoons, has received critical acclaim.

Cartoon Network, currently seen in 77.7 million U.S. homes and 145 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s 24-hour, ad-supported cable service offering the best in animated entertainment.  Drawing from the world's largest cartoon library, Cartoon Network also showcases unique original ventures such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy and other Cartoon Cartoons.  Since its launch in 1992, Cartoon Network has remained one of ad-supported cable's highest-rated networks. Cartoon Network's Web site is located at  (AOL Keyword: Cartoon Network).

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., an AOL Time Warner company, is a major producer of news and entertainment product around the world and the leading provider of programming for the basic cable industry.

FAN ALERT - November 2002

NEW!! Fred Grandinetti let me know that it appears as if "The Popeye Show" (talked about below) has been moved to 7:30PM (EST) on Sunday nights.

November 20, 2002 -  From Fred Grandinetti, co-founder of the International Popeye Fan Club:

New episodes of "The Popeye Show" should begin this Sunday, November 17, at 9:30pm, on the Cartoon Network.  Popeye is also seen daily on the "Acme Hour" (color cartoons), 2-3pm.  Popeye is usually the 4th cartoon on this show.

Please drop a note to the producer, Mr. Mills.  He has done a SUPER job with this program and I think we should take a moment to let him know it.

We have news from a fan named Jon!  Here it is:

"I have some good news.  Popeye IS featured on Boomerang.  Every Wednesday there is a three hour block of our favorite Sailor (both Famous Studios cartoons and redrawn Fleischer Popeyes are shown.)  Also, Popeye is still a regular feature on both Cartoon Network's ACME HOUR and LATE NIGHT BLACK AND WHITE (along with the WB and MGM cartoons.)"
