Key words: Picture Book, Fiction
Recommended Reading Level: Grades 1, 2
Theme: Sounds and sights in the dark, when combined with a child's imagination, can be many things, but when approached calmly and rationally they have very simple explanations.
Summary: Frances is not tired enough to sleep even after a glass of milk and several kisses from her parents. As she lays in her bed, many sights and sounds frighten her into searching out the protection of her parents, until they have had enough. Then she must decide whether to face the strange sounds alone and finally fall asleep or risk a spanking by again getting up and running to her parents.
Strengths: This story portrays loving parents who take seriously the concerns of their daughter and reassure her of their care. It also shows a daughter who realizes the importance of ultimate obedience to the will of her parents. It also accurately portrays how a child's imagination can make much of ordinary sights and sounds. The sentences are relatively short and the vocabulary is basic, making this book a good choice for a young reader.
Weaknesses: I can not find any weaknesses in this book. It is an enjoyable story.
Other Notes: This book seems to present a good picture of a loving family. Perhaps a young child will see the silliness of Frances' imagining and avoid such things when it's time for him or her to go to bed.
